The reef formation found here is one of the most spectacular and intricate in Ari Atoll. One of the highlights of this dive is the awe-inspiring sight of hammerhead sharks emerging in large groups just before sunrise. During the early hours, divers can also witness dolphins, dog tooth tunas, and schools of black snapper at the reef edge. Fish Head – North Ari

Fish Head, also known as Shark Point or Mushimasmingili Thila, is a stunning example of a thila – a large, isolated flat top reef that rises sharply from the inner atoll floor. The reef starts at 40m to 50m depth and comes up to around 10m from the surface. This dive site is a paradise for shark lovers as it’s one of the best spots to see them. The site features a series of caves and overhangs, where thousands of blueline snapper can be seen against a backdrop of black coral. Monty Halls

Monty is an ex-Royal Marines Officer who worked for Nelson Mandela during the peace process in the early nineties. He left the Marines to pursue a career in expeditions, travel journalism and biology, achieving a First Class Honours Degree and becoming qualified as a marine biologist.

His degree was funded by running expeditions, the most notable of which was leading a multi-national team to the discovery of a sunken city off the Indian coast in 2002. During this period he also led four expeditions to Southern Africa, three to Malawi to explore the ecosystem of the lake and investigate poaching activity on the Nyika Plateau, and one to South Africa to dive looking for evidence of prehistoric settlements in cave systems off the Cape. For his work he was awarded the Bish Medal for services to exploration by the Scientific Exploration Society.

INTO THE BLUE

In 2003 Monty formed his own expedition company, completing four circumnavigations of the globe over the next four years, seeking out the greatest encounters in the ocean. This brought him to the attention of television producers, being head-hunted as a competitor in the flagship Channel 4 show ‘Superhumans’, a test of elite performers, competing in a series of challenges devised by the QinetiQ testing centre. Monty won this competition, and was in demand to present further series for Channel 4, National Geographic, the History Channel, Channel 5, and the BBC.

He is best known for his three BBC2 series ‘Great Escapes’, where he lived on the west coast of Scotland and Ireland with his dog Reuben. He also presented the multi-award winning series ‘Great Barrier Reef’. In 2014 he has completed filming on the ground-breaking expedition series ‘Lost Worlds’ for the Discovery Channel. Monty has written several books, and is a regular contributor to magazines and newspapers, many of them communicating his enthusiasm for the natural world. He is also an Ambassador for various conservation groups and was awarded an honorary Doctorate by Plymouth University.

Over the last decade Monty’s real passion has become leadership and team building, drawing on his vast experience. As a speaker and corporate trainer, his work is both national and international, running courses from his base in south Devon and working with various organisations throughout the UK.

Maldives

Sharks

In the Maldives, there are between 25 to 30 different species of sharks that inhabit the surrounding waters. Among these, there are several common species that you are most likely to encounter during your visit. These include:

  1. Blacktip Reef Sharks – These sharks are typically found near coral reefs and feed on small schooling fish and crustaceans.

  2. Whitetip Reef Sharks – Similar to blacktip reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks also inhabit coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the shallow coastal waters of the Maldives.

  3. Grey Reef Shark – The abundance of coral reefs in the Maldives makes it an ideal habitat for the grey reef shark and other species of reef sharks.

  4. Tiger Sharks – Some parts of the Maldives have a large permanent population of tiger sharks, including the Fuhvamulah atoll, which is believed to have up to 200 adults.

  5. Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks – With their distinctive T-shaped heads, these sharks are easily recognizable and can be found in the Maldives.

  6. Whale Shark – The largest species of shark in the world, whale sharks are gentle giants that can grow up to 60 feet long.

  7. Nurse Shark – Measuring around 6 feet long, nurse sharks are commonly found in tropical and subtropical waters throughout the Pacific Ocean.

  8. Thresher Shark – Although usually found in open waters, thresher sharks can sometimes be seen close to the island of Fuvahmulah in the Maldives, where they visit a cleaning station.

Aside from these species, there are also other sharks that you may encounter, such as the zebra shark (also known as the leopard shark), the guitar shark (a type of ray), and the silky shark (commonly seen around deepwater reefs, sometimes diving to depths up to 1,600 feet).

Diving

Liveaboard

Liveaboard diving is widely regarded as the ultimate way to experience an unforgettable diving vacation. For many seasoned divers, this type of adventure is essential for exploring remote destinations, such as Costa Rica’s Cocos Islands or The Galapagos Islands. Liveaboard charters offer the unique opportunity to explore vast areas and dive different parts of a country, such as the Maldives or Raja Ampat.

A liveaboard is a purpose-built scuba diving vessel or an existing boat that has been adapted to cater to divers. These trips typically last longer than one night, with the average duration being 7 nights. Liveaboard boats can host between 12 and 30 divers, although smaller and larger vessels are also available. Most liveaboard packages include diving, food, and drinks.
