Palau is considered one of the most spectacular scuba diving holiday destinations on earth, with over 60 amazing dive sites and visibility averaging around 30 metres. In addition to the now world famous wrecks from World War II, there are a variety of stunning reefs, canyons, caves, drop offs and blue holes to get excited about. Cruise Highlights

Full Moon Spawning

Palau Siren’s 10 night, Special Full Moon Spawning liveaboard scuba diving itinerary offers guests something truly exceptional. Divers joining these cruises will have a chance to witness one of the most spectacular natural events on earth; the spawning aggregations of the red snapper (lutjanus bohar) at full moon lunar cycles.

Around the time of the full moon in Palau, vast numbers of red snappers aggregate to perform a spawning spectacle full of energy and excitement. It is something only a select few people ever get to witness and you can be one of them. During the period of the liveaboard itinerary when the full moon spawning will occur, Palau Siren’s Cruise Director will give a number of informative presentations about these unique dives, covering everything from the ecology of these events to the best way to photograph them.  Please note that these dives are only for the experienced diver as there can often be very strong currents at the sites where the action is happening. Diving on these itineraries is mostly within the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a day at Peleliu. The islands have narrow channels and current flows that change with the tides making navigation around some parts of the lagoon more ideally suited to the skiff tenders. Additionally, Palau Siren and all other liveaboards in Palau are mandated to use specific mooring areas and anchorage points scattered around the Rock Islands, meaning that cruising within the lagoon and around the islands is minimal. Dive groups are dropped off and picked up at the dives sites by the skiffs with transfer between the main vessel and most dive locations usually taking 5-15 minutes depending on where Palau Siren is anchored. In addition to the spawning dives, on some itineraries we offer the opportunity to experience ‘Blackwater’ diving in Palau. Imagine rolling off the boat in the pitch black of night, sometimes many miles away from the shallow water of the reefs, to watch large migrations of weird and wonderful creatures as they ascend from the depths towards the surface to feed.

Raja Ampat

Sharks

Raja Ampat is a haven for a variety of shark species, making it an ideal habitat to witness these majestic creatures in their natural element. Blacktip, whitetip, and grey reef sharks thrive in the area, thanks to the abundance of prey in the ecosystem. These top predators are fascinating to watch as they cruise in search of their next meal.

At deeper depths, four species of walking sharks reign supreme. These include tasselled and ornate wobbegongs, as well as two species of epaulette sharks, which may wriggle and “walk” across the sea floor, but are in fact skilled predators.

Wobbegongs and epaulette sharks are typically found in shallow temperate and tropical waters of the western Pacific Ocean and eastern Indian Ocean, particularly around Australia and Indonesia. However, in 2013, one of the epaulette species was discovered near Halmahera Island in Raja Ampat and was named Hemiscyllium Halmahera, making it a unique and special part of the area’s marine life.

Diving

Liveaboard

Liveaboard diving is widely regarded as the ultimate way to experience an unforgettable diving vacation. For many seasoned divers, this type of adventure is essential for exploring remote destinations, such as Costa Rica’s Cocos Islands or The Galapagos Islands. Liveaboard charters offer the unique opportunity to explore vast areas and dive different parts of a country, such as the Maldives or Raja Ampat.

A liveaboard is a purpose-built scuba diving vessel or an existing boat that has been adapted to cater to divers. These trips typically last longer than one night, with the average duration being 7 nights. Liveaboard boats can host between 12 and 30 divers, although smaller and larger vessels are also available. Most liveaboard packages include diving, food, and drinks.
