Aliwal Shoal rated by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top 10 dive spots in the world,
South Africa is the ultimate destination for you adventure holiday. Adrenaline shark diving, wreck diving and amazing reefs.
The marine life of the shoal is spectacular. Raggies or ragged tooth sharks are regularly spotted between June and November as they use the area to mate. They are, despite looking like hunters of the deep, rather docile. You are likely to spot them close to a famous area known as the ‘raggy caves’.
But it is not only the prospect of seeing 15 to 20 sharks at any one time that attracts divers here. You can also see mantas, moray eels, huge stingrays, sweetlips, potato groupers (also known as potato bass or cod) and turtles.
Whilst, with any luck and only at certain times of the year, you can also hope to see dolphins, humpbacks, whale sharks and hammerheads. This excludes the schools of pelagic and coral fish that frequent the 5 kilometre long reef or shoal.
This is where we will spend the next week diving. Voted one of the best dive sites in the world. A typical day will start off with a small breakfast and then a 5 minute journey to Umkomnazi where we will launch the boat through the surf, sit back and enjoy the 5km ride out to the Aliwal Shoal. Expect to see Sharks – lots of Sharks. There will be anything and everything from Oceanic Blacktip’s, Zambezi’s Hammerheads, and of course the Raggie Tooth Sharks, Don’t even rule out the odd Great White. This time of year we can expect to see the Humpback Whales migrating to the warmer waters of Mozambique. Divers often see them at the surface and are able to join them in the water for a quick swim. This is one of the few places in the world to be able to swim/snorkel with Humpback Whales. Around 1pm we return back to the Villa for afternoon of leisure. Evenings are usually spent around the Braai area with a glass of wine or a beer. Nearby restaurants are also available.
