The Wild Islands Expedition

A Luxury Island-Hopping Adventure Through the Philippines

Designed for nature enthusiasts, wildlife lovers, birdwatchers, snorkellers, photographers, and adventurous travellers, The Wild Islands Expedition offers a unique opportunity to explore some of the most beautiful and undiscovered islands in the Philippines.

Unlike traditional island-hopping tours that rush between destinations, this carefully crafted expedition focuses on immersive exploration, allowing guests to experience each island’s distinctive landscapes, wildlife, culture, and natural beauty in depth.

Aboard the luxury expedition yacht Philippines Explorer I, guests journey through the spectacular Sibuyan Sea, discovering a collection of remote islands largely untouched by mass tourism. Along the way, you’ll encounter pristine beaches, volcanic coastlines, rainforest-covered mountains, hidden waterfalls, thriving mangrove ecosystems, traditional fishing villages, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Philippine archipelago.

The expedition offers exceptional opportunities for birdwatching in the Philippines, snorkelling on vibrant coral reefs, paddleboarding in crystal-clear waters, wildlife encounters, nature photography, and guided coastal exploration. Every day reveals a new side of this remarkable region, from the dramatic peaks of Sibuyan Island, often referred to as the “Galápagos of Asia”, to the extensive mangrove forests of Tablas Island and the stunning limestone coastlines and secluded beaches of Carabao Island.

Combining luxury, adventure, wildlife, and authentic cultural experiences, this voyage showcases a diversity of habitats and ecosystems rarely found within a single itinerary.

More than simply a cruise, The Wild Islands Expedition is a true Philippine expedition voyage—an unforgettable journey through some of the country’s most remote, spectacular, and underrated islands, far beyond the reach of conventional tourism.

Cruise Highlights

ISLANDS AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD

Day 1 – Donsol to Ticao Island

Welcome aboard Philippines Explorer I and the start of your Wild Islands Expedition.

After embarkation in Donsol at 2:00 PM, settle into your spacious cabin and enjoy your first taste of life aboard our luxury expedition yacht as we cruise through the scenic waters of the Bicol Region. The short voyage to Ticao Island provides the perfect introduction to the adventure ahead, with spectacular coastal scenery and opportunities to spot seabirds and marine life along the way.

By late afternoon, we arrive at a secluded anchorage where guests can enjoy snorkelling in crystal-clear waters, paddleboarding along the coastline, beach exploration, or simply relaxing on deck with a refreshing drink as the sun sets over the Philippine archipelago.

Ticao’s mangrove forests and coastal habitats are rich in birdlife, making this an excellent introduction to the region’s wildlife. Kingfishers, orioles, coucals, sunbirds, egrets, and numerous shorebirds are frequently encountered during the cooler hours of the day.

As evening falls, we gather on the beach for a memorable welcome barbecue beneath the stars before returning aboard for our first peaceful night at anchor.

Day 2 – Crossing the Sibuyan Sea

Today we embark on one of the most scenic passages of the expedition as we leave Masbate Province behind and journey towards the legendary island of Sibuyan.

Far more than simply a travel day, this crossing offers a wonderful opportunity to experience life at sea aboard Philippines Explorer II. Flying fish regularly dart across the bow wave, seabirds glide effortlessly overhead, and pods of dolphins are occasionally spotted in the deep blue waters of the Sibuyan Sea.

Guests can spend the day relaxing on deck, enjoying presentations from the expedition team, photographing the ever-changing seascapes, or simply unwinding as the yacht cruises through one of the least-visited regions of the central Philippines.

By late afternoon, the dramatic silhouette of Sibuyan Island appears on the horizon. Dominated by the rugged peaks of Mount Guiting-Guiting, the island’s rainforest-covered mountains create one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Philippines.

We spend the evening anchored beneath these towering slopes, surrounded by pristine wilderness.

Day 3 – Sibuyan Island Rainforest Expedition

Often referred to as the “Galápagos of Asia,” Sibuyan Island is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, ancient rainforests, and remarkable concentration of endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.

Today is dedicated to exploring this remarkable island with experienced local guides. Our journey takes us deep into lush tropical rainforest where crystal-clear rivers, hidden waterfalls, giant ferns, orchids, and towering trees create one of the most impressive natural environments in the Philippines.

For birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, Sibuyan is a true highlight. Depending on conditions, species may include the Philippine Trogon, Tarictic Hornbill, Philippine Hanging Parrot, drongos, fantails, bulbuls, flowerpeckers, and a variety of other forest birds.

Beyond the wildlife, it is the sheer scale and untouched beauty of the rainforest that leaves the greatest impression. Here, rivers tumble from mist-covered mountains and vast stretches of primary forest remain largely unchanged for centuries.

After a rewarding day ashore, we return to Philippines Explorer II to enjoy another tranquil evening beneath the island’s magnificent mountain backdrop.

Day 4 – Sibuyan to Romblon Island

This morning begins with a visit to the beautiful Cantingas River, widely regarded as one of the finest river systems in the region.

Fed by the rainforest-covered mountains of Sibuyan, the river’s crystal-clear waters flow through lush forest valleys, creating natural swimming pools and idyllic spots to relax, swim, and enjoy the surrounding scenery. The riverbanks also offer excellent opportunities for nature photography and birdwatching.

Later in the day, Philippines Explorer II sets course for nearby Romblon Island. The short crossing allows ample time for afternoon exploration of one of the Philippines’ most charming yet overlooked island destinations.

While Romblon is known for its beautiful beaches and marble heritage, its true appeal lies in its authentic island atmosphere. Quiet villages, coastal viewpoints, forested hillsides, and winding country roads provide a fascinating glimpse into traditional island life far removed from the country’s more developed tourist destinations.

As the sun dips below the horizon, we anchor in a sheltered bay and enjoy another relaxing evening aboard.

Day 5 – Tablas Island & Looc Bay Mangrove Sanctuary

A short morning cruise brings us to Tablas Island, one of the hidden gems of the Romblon Archipelago and a highlight of the Wild Islands Expedition.

Our day begins in the calm waters of Looc Bay, home to one of the most extensive and ecologically important mangrove systems in the Philippines. Exploring by paddleboard or tender, we navigate through winding mangrove channels and peaceful waterways that provide sanctuary for kingfishers, herons, egrets, mudskippers, and a variety of wetland wildlife.

The mangrove forests offer exceptional opportunities for wildlife photography, birdwatching, and simply appreciating the tranquillity of this unique ecosystem.

Later, we venture inland to visit the beautiful Mainit Falls, hidden within the tropical forests of Tablas. Surrounded by lush vegetation and far from the crowds, these cascading falls provide the perfect setting for a refreshing swim and a chance to experience another side of the island’s natural beauty.

The surrounding forests and river corridors support a rich diversity of birdlife, adding yet another fascinating habitat to our journey through the wild islands of the Philippines.

As evening approaches, we return to Philippines Explorer I and continue our voyage through one of Southeast Asia’s most beautiful and undiscovered island regions.

Meet Philippines Explorer I
Philippines Explorer I has a remarkable history of exploration. Originally built to withstand the demanding conditions of the North Sea, she began her working life as an offshore support vessel servicing oil platforms in some of the world’s most challenging waters. She later served with the New Zealand Navy before embarking on a new chapter as a marine research and diving vessel operating throughout Micronesia.
Today, following an extensive transformation and acquisition in Australia, Philippines Explorer I has been reborn as one of the most advanced expedition vessels operating in the Philippines.
Having successfully explored the waters of Southeast Asia aboard Philippines Explorer II, we knew our next vessel needed to offer something truly exceptional. Designed for travellers who wish to venture further without compromising on comfort, the vessel combines rugged expedition capability with the standards of a premium boutique cruise. Whether crossing open ocean passages or anchored in a remote tropical bay, Philippines Explorer I offers outstanding stability, comfort, and safety throughout every voyage.
Sustainability has been a key focus throughout the vessel’s redevelopment. Operating on battery power during overnight hours significantly reduces noise and emissions, while extensive soundproofing ensures guests enjoy the peaceful night’s sleep expected aboard a luxury expedition vessel.
Our carefully curated itineraries showcase the very best of the Philippines, from encounters with humpback whales in the far north and world-class diving on remote coral reefs, to island exploration, authentic cultural experiences, local cuisine, bustling markets, and fascinating insights into the rich history and traditions of the Filipino people.

Liveaboard

Liveaboard diving is widely regarded as the ultimate way to experience an unforgettable diving vacation. For many seasoned divers, this type of adventure is essential for exploring remote destinations, such as Costa Rica’s Cocos Islands or The Galapagos Islands. Liveaboard charters offer the unique opportunity to explore vast areas and dive different parts of a country, such as the Maldives or Raja Ampat.

A liveaboard is a purpose-built scuba diving vessel or an existing boat that has been adapted to cater to divers. These trips typically last longer than one night, with the average duration being 7 nights. Liveaboard boats can host between 12 and 30 divers, although smaller and larger vessels are also available. Most liveaboard packages include diving, food, and drinks.
