Maldives Far South

Even by Maldives standards, the Far South liveaboard itinerary is something special. Cruising around the southernmost atolls of the Maldives, you will dive on both sides of the Equator. Huvadhoo Atoll, administratively divided into Northern and Southern Huvadhoo, is the largest atoll in the Maldives. Beautiful coral reefs, exhilarating walls and channels, and vibrant marine life are waiting on almost every dive. Fuvahmulah Atoll is unique! A UNSESCO designated biosphere reserve, it comprises a single island and is renowned for silver tips and tiger shark encounters. As far south as you can go within the Maldives, Addu Atoll boasts one of the archipelago’s best manta points and the largest shipwreck – The British Loyalty. Strong currents are to be expected on the majority of dives throughout the Far South itinerary, but the rewards are worth it!

Cruise Highlights

Far South

Diving in the far south of the Maldives, including the atolls of Huvadhoo, Fuvahmulah, and Addu, offers pristine, remote, and spectacular experiences with abundant pelagic life and sharks. These areas are less crowded than the central atolls due to their remote location and are best explored via a liveaboard, especially between January and May. Expect to see a variety of sharks like tiger, hammerhead, and grey reef, along with manta rays, whale sharks, and other large Pelagic’s

Huvadhoo

Huvadhoo Atoll, the world’s second-largest atoll, features a circular expanse with a deep central lagoon enclosed by reefs and coral islets. Its 40 reef segments create a diverse diving environment, teeming with marine life and vibrant corals, offering exceptional pelagic encounters and exciting drift dives.

Fuvahmulah Atoll

Situated within the Equatorial Channel between Huvadhoo and Addu, Fuvahmulah Atoll stands as a unique diving destination, best known for frequent sightings of tiger sharks and silvertips.

Addu Atoll

Known for year-round manta ray sightings, Addu Atoll is also home to various sharks, turtles, and abundant marine life. Inside the atoll, divers can explore the 140 metre long British Loyalty wreck, a WWII fuel tanker scuttled by the British Navy in 1946.

Maldives Master

Maldives Master welcomes 26 divers on board with spacious modern comfort, providing the best Maldivian diving experience.

Maldives Master is a 42m liveaboard vessel that boasts two roomy fixed double-bed cabins, ten convertible twin/double cabins and two single cabins. She features an indoor dining area, a bar, an indoor air-conditioned lounge and an outdoor jacuzzi. A shaded outdoor lounge area can be found on the mid-deck, plus four different sun decks: a viewing deck located at the front of both the mid-deck and upper deck, an open-air deck on the top deck, and an ocean deck at the stern of the boat, all providing comfortable seating and loungers.

The ocean deck is a unique feature allowing guests to relax in the open air while close to the water. On many evenings the floodlights will illuminate the water just off the ocean deck to attract plankton which draws the manta rays and whale sharks. There have been many close sightings of feeding mantas and whale sharks. Have your camera ready.

One of the most outstanding features of Maldives Master is the custom-built dhoni (diving support vessel) Blue Shadow. This 19m dhoni is spacious, fast, and equipped with all the modern conveniences that divers want. Each diver has their own station with plenty of space to store their gear and kit up, and the dhoni crew is ready to assist. During the journeys to and from the dive sites, you can ascend the small stairs to the top deck to enjoy the sun and stunning views. There is a toilet with a shower located inside the main deck plus two handheld showers on the back deck, and separate camera and equipment rinse tanks. A fast engine, two generators, and two compressors with a nitrox membrane system mean you will enjoy a first-rate diving experience in the Maldives.

Sharks

In the Maldives, there are between 25 to 30 different species of sharks that inhabit the surrounding waters. Among these, there are several common species that you are most likely to encounter during your visit. These include:

  1. Blacktip Reef Sharks – These sharks are typically found near coral reefs and feed on small schooling fish and crustaceans.

  2. Whitetip Reef Sharks – Similar to blacktip reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks also inhabit coral reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in the shallow coastal waters of the Maldives.

  3. Grey Reef Shark – The abundance of coral reefs in the Maldives makes it an ideal habitat for the grey reef shark and other species of reef sharks.

  4. Tiger Sharks – Some parts of the Maldives have a large permanent population of tiger sharks, including the Fuhvamulah atoll, which is believed to have up to 200 adults.

  5. Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks – With their distinctive T-shaped heads, these sharks are easily recognizable and can be found in the Maldives.

  6. Whale Shark – The largest species of shark in the world, whale sharks are gentle giants that can grow up to 60 feet long.

  7. Nurse Shark – Measuring around 6 feet long, nurse sharks are commonly found in tropical and subtropical waters throughout the Pacific Ocean.

  8. Thresher Shark – Although usually found in open waters, thresher sharks can sometimes be seen close to the island of Fuvahmulah in the Maldives, where they visit a cleaning station.

Aside from these species, there are also other sharks that you may encounter, such as the zebra shark (also known as the leopard shark), the guitar shark (a type of ray), and the silky shark (commonly seen around deepwater reefs, sometimes diving to depths up to 1,600 feet).

Diving

Liveaboard

Liveaboard diving is widely regarded as the ultimate way to experience an unforgettable diving vacation. For many seasoned divers, this type of adventure is essential for exploring remote destinations, such as Costa Rica’s Cocos Islands or The Galapagos Islands. Liveaboard charters offer the unique opportunity to explore vast areas and dive different parts of a country, such as the Maldives or Raja Ampat.

A liveaboard is a purpose-built scuba diving vessel or an existing boat that has been adapted to cater to divers. These trips typically last longer than one night, with the average duration being 7 nights. Liveaboard boats can host between 12 and 30 divers, although smaller and larger vessels are also available. Most liveaboard packages include diving, food, and drinks.
