Garden Route

Discover the enchanting paradise of Knysna, nestled amidst lush indigenous forests, serene lakes, and golden beaches, showcasing the natural beauty of South Africa. Known as the Jewel in the Crown along the Garden Route, Knysna rests alongside a captivating lagoon, now a protected marine reserve.  Knysna offers endless leisure and outdoor adventures with its beaches, lakes, mountains, and rivers.

Within the town, charming craft shops, flea markets, and cozy cafes exude small-town hospitality. The surrounding area is a haven for wildlife, including the rare forest elephant, the elusive Knysna Loerie, dolphins, and visiting whales. Explore the vast Knysna forests through demarcated walks, immersing yourself in its rich history and diverse flora and fauna.

Marvel at the iconic Knysna Heads, two striking cliffs guarding the lagoon’s entrance, offering breathtaking views and access to the Featherbed Nature Reserve. Traverse the town’s main street, seamlessly integrated with the N2 highway, and experience the unique accommodation option of renting a houseboat to explore Knysna and its surrounds from a different perspective. Knysna epitomizes the natural splendor and charm of South Africa, a destination where every corner unveils a new wonder to behold.

Smoke that Thunders

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, also known as “Mosi oa-Tunya” (“the smoke that thunders”), holds a mesmerizing position at nearly the midpoint of the Zambezi River’s epic 2700-kilometer journey from its source to the sea. Here, the river dramatically plunges into a 100-meter vertical chasm, spanning the entire one-and-a-half-kilometer width of the river, crafting the largest curtain of falling water on the planet and earning its place as one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

The sheer power of the falls is awe-inspiring, as evidenced by the record-breaking flow of 1958, when it surged to over 700,000 cubic meters of water per minute, causing the water in the gorges to rise 18 meters (60 feet) above its typical flood level. Over millennia, the relentless force of the Zambezi’s currents has relentlessly carved through rock faults and fissures, shaping not just one, but eight successive precipices, with the ninth now in the making.

As our early ancestors inhabited this region some 1.5 million years ago, they would have beheld a different Victoria Falls than the one we marvel at today. As one of Africa’s most spectacular natural phenomena, it’s no wonder that Victoria Falls has captivated human interest over the ages, imbuing the area with a rich tapestry of history and mystery.

Big 5

SAFARI

No safari to Africa is complete without marvelling at an elite grouping of her most famous residents, the Big 5. So, what is a Big 5 safari? Well, it’s any safari where you get to see the lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino!

  • Lion: King of the jungle, or rather bushveld, the lion is Africa’s most impressive and largest big cat.

  • Rhino: We love the rhino so much that we named ourselves after it. A powerful herbivore, it’s also, unfortunately, an endangered species.

  • Leopard: This spotted big cat is famously elusive, and seeing one in real life is one of the most memorable moments on a Big 5 safari.

  • Buffalo: The African buffalo is a large, cattle-like animal that falls prey to other animals like the lion, but they put up quite the fight with their muscular bodies and impressive horns.

  • Elephant: As the largest land mammal, the African elephant is our gentle giant that you cannot (and don’t want to) miss seeing on a Big 5 safari.

Bush

Walk

A whole new world awaits those who exit their 4×4 and tackle the veld on foot. While a game drive is an exciting experience, nothing beats the quiet intimacy of encountering wildlife eye-to-eye in their own domain. Although you won’t cover the distance one does in a vehicle, with no disturbing exhaust fumes or running engines, walking in a place untouched by human interference allows you to experience nature on an altogether different level.

Experience a pristine African walking safari on foot in the Mjejane Private Game Reserve. You can prepare for a 3.5-to-4.5-hour hike. The weekly guided walks will show you what ‘up close and personal really means

Garden Route

Beaches

Plettenberg Bay boasts a variety of beaches catering to surfers of all levels, as well as offering perfect spots for family outings. Lookout Beach provides gentle waves for swimming and surfing, while Robberg Beach offers scenic views and rock pools to explore. Singing Kettle Beach in Keurbooms adds another secluded option.

Knysna’s estuary lagoon is ideal for picnics and shallow swims, with Bollard Bay accessible during low tides. Buffalo Bay, just outside of town, offers a blend of activities including surfing, swimming, and kite surfing. Brenton Beach stretches to Buffs, offering untouched beauty.

Further along the coast from Knysna, beaches like Myoli, Victoria Bay, and Wilderness Beach provide diverse experiences, from wilder waves for kite-surfing to serene stretches of white sand against picturesque mountain backdrops.

Helicopter

Tour

The spectacular helicopter flight over the Victoria Falls is known as the ‘Flight of Angels’.

David Livingstone famously wrote on seeing the Victoria Falls for the first time in 1855 that “Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. Little did he know that 150 years later he could have exactly that opportunity. The best way to appreciate the true splendour of the Victoria Falls is to view them from the air. Our helicopters have specially designed ‘bubble shaped’ windows perfect for panoramic viewing and great photographic opportunities from all seats.

Due to the close proximity of Maramba Aerodrome to the Zambezi River, the helicopters are over the spectacular scenery of the Zambezi River within 30 seconds after take-off

25 Minute Zambezi Spectacular

After take off you will fly out over the Victoria Falls where our pilot will fly left and right hand circuits over the Victoria Falls in both directions. Continuing the flight downstream over the Batoka Gorge, experience the natural beauty of this awe-inspiring dramatic feature, following the mighty Zambezi River, as it carves its way through the steep cliffs.
As we head back we fly over the upper Zambezi River & the National Park, home to a wide variety of wildlife species.

White Water

Rafting

The Zambezi was designed by the dare devil in Mother Nature, and there is no theme park in the world that could ever compete. Contrary to popular belief, the river is not one long, frothing rapid. The “Devils Toilet Bowl”, “The Stairway to Heaven” and “Mothers Revenge” (just to name a few) spring before you in short, dramatic bursts. During the high water seasons (January, February, March, May, June, July), gallons of water crash down the Victoria Falls, streaming into the thirsty gorge, and flooding the rocks and outcrops that form the rapids. When you dip your fingertips in to rippling water, you touch the last of what has gone before, and the first of what is still to come. At these times of the year, the river is more subdued, relaxing after a thunderous low water race. However, the sheer volume of water makes the first ten rapids unrunnable, and thus rafters will only tackle rapid 11 (The Over lander Eater) through to number 23 (The Morning Shave). As the water levels continue to creep higher and higher around March, rafters respectfully leave the Zambezi to her own devices, until they drop again around June.

Robberg Peninsula

Hike

Robberg Nature Reserve is one of the most important and iconic experiences in Plettenberg Bay. Located along the Garden Route in the Western Cape, this popular experience is one of Plett’s most unique areas to visit while here on holiday.

It is one of the most recognisable and traversed peninsulas in the world. The beauty of Robberg Nature Reserve is iconic and if you happen to find yourself in the area of Plettenberg Bay, you absolutely must visit. A World Heritage Site and National Monument, steeped in history, with prehistoric rocks and Stone Age artefacts, Robberg attracts visitors from all over the globe. The picturesque peninsula is home to a wealth of fynbos, flora and ocean life, all of which dazzle the senses.

Choose to hike the different trails, each with its own degree of difficulty, but all with unique beauty and scenery. This experience is unlike any other coastal encounter. The history of this place and the animal kingdom is otherworldly and once you have been, you are likely to return again and again.

The island adjacent to the peninsula is filled with lizards soaking up the sun and below, the waves crash against the rocks propelling rainbows of water spray into the air. The eastern side of the reserve gets the hot sun blazing down upon it, so lots of seals and dassies have made this side their home.

On a clear day you are likely to spot the ‘Robberg Express’, a very large great white shark, slowly making its way around the bay. Walk the whole way and you will reach a beautiful sand dune which leads to the western side of the reserve. This is the ‘wild side’ and its beauty is rugged and spectacular. Robberg is rumored to be one of the only places in the world to view great white sharks, from land, in their natural habitat.
